Breast Cancer Survival Rates - Stage One Breast Cancer

The Whole Truth and Nothing by The Truth on the Survival Rates

The cancer is usually two centimeters or less in size and it hasn't spread anywhere and is usually localized in the breast tissue. Since stage 1 breast cancer is still in its very early stages, a women with stage 1 breast cancer has as high as 98% chance of survival on a 5-year survival rate average. That's because women respond very well at this stage with a series/combination of treatments.

This is why it is crucial that you check yourself regularly, and go to the doctors when you find an unusual breast tissue. Only slightly more than half of the breast cancer conditions get discovered in this early first stage (in US). That's an average number, women growing up in the poorer families have less then 50% chances of having their cancer discovered in stage 1. That's due to not visiting the doctors often.

So, it is very important for women to continuously check if their bodies exhibit breast cancer symptoms early on. Check your self once per month. In North America, 1 in 8 women will get diagnosed with breast cancer in their life! Among the signs you should look for are:

  • Lump under the breast that exists even after your menstrual cycle; when felt it usually is painless but may cause a tingly/prickly sensation. A mammogram can help facilitate the detection of lumps even before lumps can be felt.
  • Flattening on one side of the breast
  • Any noticeable changes in size and texture or the general temperature of the breast
  • Discharges from the nipple
  • Conspicuous areas that are very different from any other area on the breasts

Depending on the site, size of the tumor and the preference of the patient and his or her surgeon, the treatments can either be a lumpectomy or mastectomy. The first one involves the surgical removal of a small area of breast tissue where the cancer is located or an area which is suspected to be cancerous. The second one is a little more aggressive and involves the removal of either or both breasts.

Remember, women respond very well to treatments against stage 1 breast cancer. The survival rate is 98% according to the statistical analysys of patients in the United States.
